“Tokyo Sky Drive” is an absolutely stunning video journey through the city of Tokyo, using a parallel image trick to great effect.
The video below is “Night Ver. 01,” but you’ll also find versions taped during the day (01 and 02), all in HD and recorded using the Sony XR500V. Music in the “Night Ver.” is the track “A Furrow Dub” by Sugar Plant.

A Parallel Image febrero 17, 2010

“A Parallel Image” is an electronic camera obscura. This media-archaeological, interactive sculpture is based on the fictive assumption that the currently still valid principle of electronically transmitting moving images, namely by breaking them down into single images and image lines, was never discovered. The result is an apparatus that attempts a highly elaborate parallel transmission of every single pixel from sender to receiver. This is only possible by connecting camera and monitor using about 2,500 cables. Unlike conventional electronic image transmission procedures, “A Parallel Image” is technologically completely transparent, conveying to the viewer a correspondence between real world and transmission that can be sensually experienced.

Displacements febrero 16, 2010

Displacements by Michael Naimark is an immersive film installation. An archetypal Americana living room was installed in an exhibition space. Then two performers were filmed in the space using a 16mm motion picture camera on a slowly rotating turntable in the room’s center. After filming, the camera was replaced with a film loop projector and the entire contents of the room were spray-painted white. The reason was to make a projection screen the right shape for projecting everything back onto itself. The result was that everything appears strikingly 3D, except for the people, who of course weren’t spray-paint white, and consequently appeared very ghostlike and unreal.
Displacements was produced three times between 1980 and 1984. By the third time, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1984, it was done.
Twenty-one years later, in 2005, my long-time friend and colleague Brenda Laurel cajoled me into a redux. The young couple in the original living room are now middle age with a teenage daughter. Mom is still pensive, Dad still watches TV, and the daugther is curious. Displacements 2005 was shot and projected in digital video rather than 16mm film, which, it turns out, was much more challenging.

As its title suggests, the interactive urban installation “12M4s” is based on a space of 12M and a time of 4s, corresponding to a human walking at ordinary speed the distance of 12m. In this space-time continuum, human movements and flows are tracked to generate a visual (particles) and sonic (granular synthesis) scape in real-time, out of their main parameters (position, orientation and speed). The result, this ‘particle synthesis’ is projected on a ‘Mylar’ screen fusing projection and reflection while building a common space in between the digital and the body spaces.
