Medial Stage and Costume Design (2002)

The goal of the project was the enhancement of the traditional static stage setting into a reactive and dynamic stage design that plays its own vital role in the narration. On the stage, large planes were arranged onto which architecture, generated in real-time, was projected. The projection screens formed clipping planes through an imaginary virtual architecture positioned on stage. Machiavelli’s – the opera’s protagonist’s – movements and gestures were camera-tracked, and the virtual architecture moved according to his movements and gestures.

Sky ear abril 28, 2010

Sky Ear consiste en una estructura compuesta por un gran número de globos de helio que contienen sensores que responden a las alteraciones que se producen en los campos hertzianos que la instalación encuentra a su paso. Al activarse, los sensores producen cambios de color en los LEDs que contienen los globos iluminándolos con multitud de colores que van variando conforme la nube de globos se va desplazando por el cielo. Otro aspecto interesante de este proyecto, consiste en que algunos de estos globos contienen en su interior teléfonos móviles. El público puede llamar a estos teléfonos para escuchar el sonido de los fenómenos naturales que estos encuentran a su paso, modificando a la misma vez las ondas situadas a su alrededor y variando con ello la composición luminosa generada por el conjunto de globos.

Multiple Shadow House abril 26, 2010

Eliasson, who has been described as “an ecstasy-inducing Danish-Icelandic artist,” has perfected the concept of smoke and mirror art that consistently wows its audience and draws crowds (including a Michael Bloomberg and numerous body guards). The packed opening felt a bit like Disney World meets the hands-on section of a science museum; particularly because the exhibition involves the viewer in a collaborative creative process.  Opening attendees played obsessively with their color-split shadows on the wall, made shadow puppets with their hands and basically behaved as if this was the first time they had even seen light divided into color spectrums or their own corporeal outline for that matter.  This  behavior illustrates Eliasson’s emphasis on the visitor’s experience and his tendency to create work in which the potential lies in the exchange between the piece and the viewer.

The subject of the weather has long shaped the content of everyday conversation. The eighteenth-century writer Samuel Johnson famously remarked ‘It is commonly observed, that when two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather; they are in haste to tell each other, what each must already know, that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm.’

In The Weather Project, the fourth in the annual Unilever Series of commissions for the Turbine Hall, Olafur Eliasson takes this ubiquitous subject as the basis for exploring ideas about experience, mediation and representation.
