Peg Mirror junio 21, 2010

Exhibited for the first time at 2005 // bitforms gallery, Daniel Rozin’s “Peg Mirror” comprises 650 circular wooden pieces that are cut on an angle. Casting shadows by twisting and rotating in unison, wooden pegs forming concentric circles surround a small central camera. The mirrored image produced in this work is activated by software authored by Rozin that processes video signals and breaks up imagery geometrically, seemingly pixel by pixel. The silently moving wood components in this piece flicker like jewels or coins in the spotlight, challenging our notions about what constitutes a “digital object”.

An electronic current passed through the wires generates light when magnetism is reconverted into energy by coils inside each bead. More at Dilight.

The ‘Swarm Light‘ is an experimental light installation with a real ‚collective consciousness’ that subtly reacts to the viewer’s audible presence. The installation is a contemporary example of how the arbitrary boundaries of fine and decorative art, design and utility are no longer of immediate aesthetic relevance. An apparently inanimate object, ‘Swarm‘ unites crucial aspects of rAndom international‘s continued experimentation with light, behavioural responses and interactive spatial environments.
The viewers‘ presence creates a soundscape that directly alters the behaviour of the entire environment surrounding ‘Swarm Light‘. Human presence brings a basic form of artificial intelligence to life. Sounds or movement captured as light and shadow create a type of participatory and performative synæsthesia that culminates in an instinctual perception of the space, rather than a cerebral judgement.

Animate Field presents a cloud of low-hanging fiber-optic filaments which create a volumetric mass for participants to directly engage in by physically occupying and moving through it. The red lit endpoints of the filaments are locally activated by people’s positions in the cloud. As the participants wade through the thicket of hanging filaments, their movement through the field creates trails of yellow light which persist as a kind of temporal residue, leaving a ghostly memory of their presence and their traveled paths.

The National Malus (crab-apple) Collection commissioned the Heatherwick studio to design a permanent pavilion to sit within their grounds.
The structure is a cube, 2.4m in each dimension, punctured by over 5000, 18mm square hollow aluminium staves that act as miniature windows with tiny glazed ends, The staves form the structure and texture of the building and suspend the cube 1m above the ground.

Firefly is an interactive lighting that reacts to human behavior like a cloud of glowing insects.
These ones change their appearance in human presence : they wriggle, light up and scatter in response to the motion of visitors around. The cloud alternately disperses and merges… and its shape evolves to take a different appearance, again and again.
