Urban Screens: Discovering the potential of outdoor screens for urban society

Abstract
Architecture and media technology is melting into each other, and buildings are turning into becoming media infrastructure. Following Sharon Zukin’s suggestions on how to interpret urban change as social and cultural change, the article discuss how our new electronic landscapes mediates, both symbolically and materially, between the socio-spatial differentiation of capital implied by market and the socio-spatial homogeneity of labour suggested by place. The focus is set on how large media corporations are presently developing building projects where the use of screen technology is an important element. These projects are analysed as reflecting shifting corporate and cultural ideas about the relations between media and society: a new material and symbolic relation between constructed spaces for symbolic creativity in the global audio visual industry and global urban centres. As with all “new” technologies, the convergence of buildings and media technology has been envisaged for some time; what is new is not necessarily the idea, but the ways in which current technology makes it possible. As the technological possibilities of urban screens unfold, we become able to analyse their social and cultural consequences more fully.

The f5x5x5 sculpture is a kinetic and luminous framework conceived and realised by LAb[au]. In software development, a framework is a methodological tool based on re-usable chunks of code, code libraries or other software pieces to assist, to develop and to glue together the different components of a software project. In regards to the f5x5x… installation the term ‘framework‘ refers to the installation’s constituting elements, a raster of fix and kinetic aluminum frames.
The installation title indicates the resolution instructing the numbers of modules used such f5x5x1equal one module up to f5x5x5 equal 5 modules.
Further ‘framework‘ refers to the multiple operating modes of the installation, from a low resolution display to a generative and interactive sculpture. Consequently the term ‘framework‘ can be understood as a way to manage conceptually and technically the sculpture’s sequential operating modes and the rules by which they switch from one mode to another.

Lightsails as guiding symbols for the exibition around the Millstaetter lake, Austria. The lighthouse is used as a metaphor to guide the visitors around the different exhitions. Nowadays the lighthouse is used as a symbole of holidays, sea, adventure and water.

Vision
Guiding theme 2010: “Media Architecture and the transition of urban, public space”.
It is necessary to initiate the development of practices for the application of media architecture to urban, public space. Digital media increasingly surge into public space by way of new interfaces like media facades and cellular phone network applications and this leads to the interaction and fusion of different technologies and patterns of use. Concurrently cities are facing immense challenges in the form of (negative) growth, economic change, power supply, traffic and migration. Media Architecture Biennale is an event that intends to shed light on the chances and risks that go along with change in appearance and social change of globalized cities and discuss alternative forms and contents of new formats of architecture and media. The cooperation of practical experience and research under involvement of diverse stakeholders and experts are in the forefront of this event.
