If you’re going to be in Rome between September 17th-19th, you’ll want to make an evening pilgrimage to the Colisseum to take in an extraordinary video installation conceived by Thyra Hilden (Denmark) and Pio Diaz (Argentina) and curated by Gianni Mercurio and Christina Clausen.
On those evenings, video screens placed in the arches of the Colosseum will make it appear as if the monument is on fire. The installation, titled “Coliseum on Fire,” is part of a wider project, City on Fire, to which the artists have devoted themselves to for some years, creating virtual fires in important institutions, monuments, museums, and churches throughout Europe. The events in Berlin, Frankfurt, Kiev, Aarhus, and Copenhagen were especially memorable. The objective is to create an exchange of ideason the theme of fragility and the transience of constructions built by man.

Six-Forty by Four-Eighty by Zigelbaum + Coelho is an interactive lighting installation designed to reveal the materiality of computation by recontextualizing the common pixel.
The pixel is a single point of light, a bit of pure information. In the computer age, pixels are used in groups to represent dynamic visual information. They are strangers that exist in our living spaces, but out of reach from our physical bodies. Six-Forty by Four-Eighty is our attempt to change that.
The installation is composed of two hundred and twenty magnetic pixel-tiles in a darkened room. Each pixel is to be touched, moved, and modified. At the start of the day the pixel-tiles are packed together as a display and by the end of the day they will have migrated across the walls in the room.
By transposing the pixel from the confines of the screen and into the physical world, focus is drawn to the materiality of computation itself and new forms for design emerge.

With only five short days left until our all-out music and art launch extravaganza, we’re starting to get really excited about the multitude of amazing work by our creators that will be crammed in one place for the night. Our hearts and brains can hardly hold so much energy. One piece we’re all aflutter over is Muti’s Randolph’s new art installation, “Imagem.” The interactive installation, which you’ll be able to walk through, is a giant cube made up of 6144 spheres of light that react to your every move with bursts of sound and color, occasionally bombarding you with both when you least expect it. Sounds like our idea of true love. Randolph designed to it to allow participants to feel as if they were allowed to enter their computer monitor, Mike Teavee style. See you at the show.

Curious Displays functions simultaneously as a form of design research and as a proposal for a new product, a future display technology. The project explores our relationship with devices and technology by examining the multi-dimensionality of communication and the complexity of social behavior and interaction. In its essence, the project functions as a piece of design fiction, considering the fluctuating nature of our present engagement with media technology and providing futurist imaginings of other ways of being.

Astrid Krogh, educated textile designer, creates the most sophisticated light installations using sources such as neon lights, LEDs or optic fibres. Her newest piece is this delicate ‘light tapestry’ which is currently exhibited within Astrid’s solo exhibition at Galleri NB in Viborg, Denmark. ‘Morild’ consists of a perforated wooden wall with illuminated spots – the endings of fiberoptic threads which are arranged in fragments of an ornament. The light source can be programmed to switch coulor and intensity in fast or slow intervals.

The ‘loop city’ proposal builds on the famous ’1947 finger plan’, which focused on connecting the suburb to the center. BIG proposes to continue to connect the area around the øresund strait in a sustainable spine of public transport, energy exchange and electric car infrastructure. The resulting development model circumscribes around the base of the ‘hand’, much like a bracelet, to combine new programs with the metro stations, providing an urban outlet throughout the suburbs.

MediaArchitecture, Urban Context and Social Practices
3rd international conference on the interaction of architecture, media and social phenomena
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany, 29 to 31 October 2010
The 3rd MediaCity conference will investigate how new media re-define social settings and urban spaces and how they influence architecture as well as media art & design in urban contexts, thus constituting new social and cultural practices.
Today, media create opportunities for diverse forms of connections between people and spaces, enabling and forming flows of information. New digital places for information and communication emerge, and the context of existing spaces is transformed by the joint impact of media and architecture, thus leading to new forms of social and cultural practices. The public sphere, the communication in ubiquitous networks, and the interaction with digital content will be a thematic focus. The conference addresses different approaches and methods of research. It will consist of three sessions and a workshop, exploring these themes in a focused way.
