Wind is inherently without form. The Exhale pavilion harnesses this essential formlessness to create a dynamic interactive environment for public art. The winning competition entry for the Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time Oceanfront project by Phu Hoang Office and Rachely Rotem Studio will create a public art venue for the annual Art Basel Miami Beach contemporary art fair. The evening programs will include video and performance artists as well as D.J. dance programs. The twenty-five thousand square foot beach site in Miami Beach will be temporarily transformed by seven miles of hanging ropes swaying in the wind. The form of the pavilion literally shifts with the weather, producing an open, flexible and dynamic environment. The Exhale pavilion eschews static divisions of space, instead promoting constant activity in informal public spaces that change their use and interactivity as the evening winds change.

A couple cross a large intersection in front of blacked out light displays in Tokyo’s Ginza district March 17. In the famous shopping mecca – and elsewhere in the nation’s capital – public apprehension over a brewing nuclear disaster is draining the streets and stores of the crowds that normally define this dynamic, densely packed city.

36 Freebord riders from San Francisco came together one gloriously clear night and made some Game Boy-inspired magic. Sporting neon Tetris halos, the riders cruised down a dark street in San Francisco and captured a Tetris skateboarding light show that will not soon be upstaged.
Set to perfectly matched music, the video shows off the Tetris skateboarding stunt in a way that will make you want to rewatch it over and over again.

Janet Echelman’s 230-foot-long aerial sculpture “1.26” suspends from the roof of the 7-story Denver Art Museum above downtown street traffic to commemorate the inaugural Biennial of the Americas.
Echelman drew inspiration from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s announcement that the February 2010 Chile earthquake shortened the length of the earth’s day by 1.26 microseconds by slightly redistributing the earth’s mass. Exploring further, Echelman drew on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) simulation of the earthquake’s ensuing tsunami, using the 3-dimensional form of the tsunami’s amplitude rippling across the Pacific as the basis for her sculptural form.
