Baillat Cardell & fils in collaboration with the illustrators Capucine Labarthe and Lino, has produced and designed 2 video installations situated in the Hall of the Place des Arts Complexe in Montreal. They capture in a metaphoric manner the inspirational process of those who create and the range of emotions felt by the spectators.

In the context of performance, digital media plays an important role in creating a sense of illusion, making the impossible possible, and giving visual properties to otherwise invisible entities. Lately we’ve seen many visual artists focus their attentions on the performance sector to create collaborative, multi-disciplinary work that merges together different practices and creative approaches to create performance based experiences that feel entirely new.

One such experiment is A4, a multimedia performance that features Korean pianist Jin Wook Lee and the collaborative visuals of Lumpens and Octamin. Opening with a black backdrop and a free-floating white sheet in the foreground, the performance pairs projection with live piano improvisation, synchronizing the audio-reactive visuals with the experimental music composition. Each pizzicato chord struck by the pianist seems seems to pluck at the undulating sheet. Several minutes into the performance, the pianist uses a golf ball to demonstrate the prepared piano technique first coined and popularized by experimental composer John Cage, placing the golf ball between or on the piano strings to alter the timbre. With gradual progression, Lee moves into Henry Cowell’s string piano technique, directly playing on the strings of his piano and entangling the sheet in nebulous confusion with this avant-garde approach.

bbass is a minimalist and enchanting installation which combines projected light with graphic animation, architecture and sound. The Florian Licht’s installation takes shape through light and sound. It tries to turn the main auditorium into an abstract space: the artwork plays with the audience and questions the visitors’ relationship with the space.

Flylight abril 15, 2011

Spotted in Milan, the mesmerizing Flylight, by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta (Studio DRIFT) in collaboration with engineers Klaas van der Molen and Luuk van Laake. It is a beautiful light installation composed of 160 glass tubes. The tubes light up and respond to the viewer and was inspired by the movements of a flock of birds. Each light is programmed with digital DNA and responds individually to the presence of viewers. Ultrasonic sensors detect the distance between viewers and installation, causing the ‘flock’ to react differently as visitors come closer or approach the installation in different configurations.

Lighting Choreographer un sistema para ampliar la capacidad expresiva del cuerpo humano por la iluminación diseñado por Minuro Fujimoto. Sincroniza los efectos de luz en el cuerpo del usuario con el movimiento y el sonido, basado en que los efectos producidos de forma recursiva son influencia del coreógrafo.

Aunque existen muchos enfoques en el equipo de audio y /o visuales que en el performance funcionan sobre la base de información del movimiento de un artista intérprete o ejecutante, que son demasiado simples para controlar los detalles de su voluntad en el sentido de la expansión de la expresión corporal. Por otra parte, no proporcionan una forma de expresión corporal para exceder el límite de los movimientos físicos, tales como mover los brazos a una velocidad muy alta. Por lo tanto, Minoru Fujimoto se le ocurrió la idea de ampliar las expresiones del cuerpo de forma interactiva por cambiar el color y el tamaño de las partes del cuerpo y la cinemática, la combinación de efectos visuales de luces mediante el control de los LED con la consideración de las características del cuerpo humano.

Lighting Choreographer is a system to expand the expressive capability of human body by lighting. It makes light effects on the user’s body synchronized with motion and sound, focusing on the viewing point that the produced effects recursively influence the choreographer.

Shadow has been realized by Minoru Fujimoto (Lighting Choreographer), and Makoto Hirata (choreographer, dancer  and composer).

Adapting for Distortion by Hiroaki Umeda

Hiroaki Umeda has often highlighted that his abstractly-devised and strongly anti-narrative works speak of the condition of contemporary man. It is therefore emblematic, almost disturbing, how in Adapting for Distortion the body of the performer seems to slowly fade away and go out of focus in luminous spirals until it becomes just a vibration, a quiver of the flesh, a shadow.

Adapting for Distortion is inspired by kinetic art and uses the most recent computing developments. Distortion of time, change of movement and immobility are at the heart of this performance, with optical effects designed to broaden the power of dance and to question the role of visual perception.
