ElectroCircus is a multidisciplinary festival, it’s a mix of music live, dance and video mapping to create a freaky funky party. It’s organized by CENC (cenc.ch) Based on a drawing by Thomas Peraudin, the Head shaped screen was ordered to us by Francois Tarrabass.

Description

Time Warp is an electronic festival held annually in Mannheim, Germany. Since launch in 1994, it has become a tradition and home to some of the world’s greatest DJs and visual designers throughout.

5 floors in total (main floors being 1 & 2) with Visual Drugstore occupying Floor 1 with VJ Mar-K.os playing alongside DJs Steffan Baumann, Laserkraft 3D, Lexy & K-Paul, Moonbootica, Slam, Carl Cox, Planetary Assault Systems, Len Faki and Chris Liebing.

Live performance by Mar-K.os for duration of 14 hours in total. Both live mixed content and into real time generated contents were used, which were crafted through a software specifically programmed for Visual Drugstore’s stage design in this years event.

Description

This short follows the collaboration between Nosaj and visual artist Aalto (Romain Tardy) at the 2010Lunchmeat Festival in Prague. Aalto, along with a team of carpenters, spent two weeks constructing the stage design for Nosaj’s set. The installation comprises more than 500 polystrene triangles.

Moment Factory acompañados del diseñador Roy Bennett, trabajó en 2008 con la producción de la banda de rock NIN para crear el escenario que sirvió de marco para su gira internacional.

“Estoy cada vez menos definido,” canta Trent Reznor, empujando y retrayendo las partes del cuerpo a través de la densa cortina estática. Ello hace hincapié a lo que NIN pretende exponer en todo momento sobre el escenario, una extensión metafísica de la banda y su música.

Este espacio fue concebido como un lugar interactivo en el que la banda tuvo en todo momento el control sobre el contenido visual que exponía en cada uno de sus conciertos. Para ello Moment Factory creó un escenario capaz de reconfigurar sus contenidos visuales a través de los los movimientos, posición e intensidad dinámica creada por cada uno de los integrantes de la banda a través de una serie de tracking que obtenían diversa información que luego era procesada para generar un contenido visual en tiempo real. Este escenario como dispositivo capturó y emitió discursos visuales en vivo mostrados sobre la transparencia de una enorme cortina de LEDs.

“I’m becoming less defined,” sings Trent Reznor, thrusting and retracting body parts through the curtain of densely white visual static. NIN’s actions trigger lights and effects – the stage is a metaphysical visual extension of the band and their music.

Moment Factory worked with NIN’s production designer Roy Bennett to create a truly interactive stage setup that gave NIN control over the visual aspects of their performance. In effect, Moment Factory created a setup where the stage itself became an instrument that reacted to the band’s position, movements and intensity.

Moment Factory’s innovative interactive design allowed NIN to track, process and generate content in real-time. An on-stage device reacted to multiple live-capture inputs, and live visuals were displayed on giant transparent LED Stealth screens. Using their XMS platform, Moment Factory created an innovative performance environment that could survive the rigors of a rock tour.

Contakt events explore themes opf Identification, Connectivity and Security in our ever-changing technology dependant world. Through interactions eith the Cube, the audience and performars are brought together in new and exciting ways, allowing direct contact and deeper connectivity than is normally avaliable at this type of event.

A Contakt event is a different experience than a regular Minus showcase. Richie Hawtin, Magda, Troy Pierce, Marc Houle, Gaiser and Heartthrob each showcase their unique style while working together to create an integrated mix and overall musical journey. Rather than a typical schedule of one set after another there is an integration of performances, smooth transitions and live collaborations resulting in a musical experience born out of improvisation and spontaneity.

The visual experience of a Contakt event brings together exclusive, unique and highly specialized even production that differs from regular Muinus events and showcases. Custom lighting and innovative LED technology enhances the musical performances of the artists. Ali Bemirel, working alongside Richie Hawtin and the others artists, deliers a visual performance whit the same type of improvisation and integrations as the musical experience. Using wireless technology to connect the performers onstage with Ali´s visual and the Member Cube interactions, allowing further integration between all elements of the show. Each Contakt event is unique and the experience will continue to grow and evolve as a new technologies are explored.

Richie Hawtin (en realidad Richard Michael Hawtin, nacido el 4 de junio de 1970 en Oxfordshire) es un músico y dj canadiense de origen inglés. Es considerado uno de los protagonistas de la segunda ola del Detroit Techno de principios de los años 90 y fue influyente en el desarrollo del Minimal Techno.

Hawtin produjo su música bajo varios seudónimos, siendo los más conocidos F.U.S.E. y Plastikman.

Richard (Richie) Hawtin (born June 4, 1970, Banbury, Oxfordshire, England) is an English-Canadian electronic musician and DJ who was an influential part of Detroit techno’s second wave of artists in the early 1990s. Hawtin is best known for his abstract, minimal works under the alias Plastikman, a pseudonym he still uses today.

Hawtin is known for DJing minimal techno sets making use of laptop computers and digital mixing equipment. In May 1990, Hawtin and fellow second-waver John Acquaviva founded the Plus 8 record label, which they named after their turntable’s pitch adjust function. In 1998, Hawtin launched Minus records, a label he uses primarily as a launch pad for his own projects.

DERIATIVE

Derivative is pleased to announce the next-gen of their collaboration with techno-futurist Richie Hawtin who is unleashing PLASTIKMAN LIVE 2010 a much-anticipated series of live shows produced in collaboration with Minus & Derivative to launch at this year’s Timewarp festival on March 27th, 2010.

The influential Plastikman performance at MUTEK 2004 was visually driven by Derivative’s powerful software tool TouchDesigner enabling Richie to orchestrate sound and visual compositions generatively and in real time; the technology altering the course of how electronic music could be performed and experienced live.

That was then. With the current generation of TouchDesigner 077 completely reengineered, the team has built an information-rich bridge between Richie’s Ableton Live rig and Derivative’s TouchDesigner. Derivative will release the TouchDesigner-Live Bridge to its users this year. Hawtin’s visual artist Ali Demirel has been working closely with Derivative’s Jarrett Smith and Markus Heckmann in LA and Toronto to create the content and a custom performing interface for the shows.

Another Hawtin/Minus/Derivative collaboration invites the community to create their own visuals to original Plastikman tracks using TouchDesigner. Hawtin and Derivative have packaged and made available for download a complete toolset that includes a purpose-built TouchDesigner synth and 4 Plastikman tracks enabling participants with full support to produce visuals in the same real-time generative environment as the show’s. Winning entries are to be incorporated into the live events.

Dedicated to advancing the way we make art and visualize information and ideas, Derivative has produced live visuals and interactive art projects for an exemplary roster of international superstars that include Prada, Herzog & de Meuron and Rush. They have also developed major theme park attractions globally. In a unique alliance with raster-noton now entering its second year Derivative designed and built an expandable framework for multi-screen live performances under the guidance of label founders carsten nicolai (alva noto) and olaf bender (byetone). The collaboration resulted in a series of shows last year at Club Transmediale, Sonar, MUTEK, OFFF, and Ars Electronica that were received as precedent-setting.

TouchDesigner is the most complete authoring tool for building interactive 3D art, visualizations, prototypes and user interfaces. Its open, broad and highly-visual procedural architecture boosts and expands discovery, creativity and productivity.

TouchDesigner FTE (Free Thinking Environment) and its counterpart TouchDesigner Pro puts a free development environment with an extremely rich feature set into the hands of artists, animators, educators and “everyone else”. “TouchDesigner is our vision of what is possible in tomorrow’s software tools for building interactive applications and exploring data, imagery and sound”, Derivative founder and CEO Greg Hermanovic states. “It exploits what is possible in today’s computing technology and is positioned to grow with the foreseeable advancements in computer, graphics and mobile technologies.”

Description

Moe (modular screen) is a light and video augmented sculpture, based on a single building element that can form an array of different, adjustable and reusable stage designs for club events and concerts. Dynamic structure that comes from the fact that elements come together at a 45 degree angle allows Moe to function well even as a standalone light object, a virtual kinetic sculpture.

This combination of a physical object and computer generated reality comes together via vvvv, a software for video synthesis designed by meso. A specific proprietary patch was built for the sculpture, using the same modular principle so that the composition of the video texture follows the thought pattern of the physical object. Every piece is textured separately, video textures are generated in real time and are input or ambient sound responsive.

For 2009. Illectricity festival in Zagreb Moe was built 5 meters tall and 8 meters wide, out of 180 elements. The entire installation cost a little bit more than 250 euro to build (just raw materials).

Moe awaits to be reincarnated in a different body.

Technical Rider

1. Workspace
Open space or indoor. Styrofoam sculpture can be placed outside but in that case we have to protect technic (beamer+pc+soundsystem) and the sculpture should be close to the wall as a precaution for the eventual windy forecast.
If placed indoor, we suggest to put it in place that has the height at least of 4-5 meters.

2. Configuration
- sculpture is made of styrofoam panels.
- projections is mapped on sculpture with one beamer
- mapping is done with software
- video projection is audio responsive
- music related to the projection is our compilation and it is playing from our pc (but it can also be live PA, DJ or a band, depends on a hardware and sound system setup)

3. Hardware brought
- 1 x pc
Styrofoam panels. Number of elements depends on the size of the space where the sculpture will be made. Latest sculpture (this can be seen in the video) consisted of 180 elements and it’s dimensions were 8 x 5 meters. Since the styrofoam panels are not expensive we suggest that you arrange the production of panels (we’ll send you the tech drawings). It can happen that it is cheaper to produce them at your place than transport them from Croatia. The cost of the 180 elements in Croatia is around 250 Euro.

Description

The BOOM-box is a concept that we have worked on for a long time. First created for the Amiens “Nuits blanches” in 2008, it has now been adapted to the demands of the international techno festival Godskitchen that tours throughout the world.

We designed the BOOM-box as an oversized Ghetto Blaster where a DJ stage takes the place of the tape recorder. It can work for any outdoor event: the Boom-box is huge, luminous, noisy and playful.

Its big scale conceals a great work on details. Everything has been custom-made for the show, from the 16 x 8m scaffolding structure, to the visuals, which represent music items, such as the ghetto-blaster, the DJ record decks, sound level displays.  Architectural visuals give a depth to the stage ; even the geographical position of the party can be displayed.

The interface program between sound and image, that we call the BOOM-Boxer, has also been designed from scratch to be as playful as possible thanks to our adapted joystick control system.

The lighting design, with stroboscopes, blinders and moving lights has also been elaborated to enhance the show

En colaboración con Willie Williams (escenógrafo del grupo U2), el estudio inglés Jason Bruges se dio a la tarea de crear  el escenario y contenido interactivo a través del cual el cantante George Michael presentó su guía por Europa en el año 2006. La escenografía plena en una topología de características luminiscentes se componía por imágenes generadas a causa de los movimientos del cantante, el cual era monitoreado por un sensor que se encargaba de convertir esta información (junto como otra venida del rango de los sonidos generados por los instrumentos musicales) a contenidos que alimentaban las infinitas formas gráficas de la escenografía.

In collaboration with U2 lighting designer Willie Williams, Jason Bruges Studio designed a system to produce interactive visuals for George Michael’s live shows. The singer wanted movement tracking and generative visuals controlled by his voice and other instruments for a range of songs within the set list.

Description

For our fourth tour with Massive Attack, UVA created a new stage set, with a wide, sculptural LED screen as the centrepiece. The visual treatments, created in collaboration with Massive Attack, are the group’s most explicitly political yet. Flickering references to rendition flights, detention without charge and surveillance societies light up the stage, and computer-controlled lights, also designed by UVA, allow perfect synchronisation between the music and the visuals.

Description

Inspired by the disco ball principle, the V-Mirror is made of 2 reflective and luminescent pannels, like giant wings allowing Vitalic to appear like an insect about to fly off.

It is made of LED pannels coverded by an adhesive solar protective film which is transparent and reflective.

This set up allows reflections of the musician himself, his instruments and the public, as well as synchronized video effets inside the pannels, all at once.

Each sonor story corresponds to a visual sequence, turned on by the musician through a specific interface. The lighting effects also reinfore the color impacts of each story.
