Description

On the night of 1 January, light artist Gerry Hofstetter projected the Swiss cross and other images on to the north face of the Jungfrau. This launched the centenary year of the Jungfrau Railway, Switzerland’s leading mountain railway.

Gerry Hofstetter has set up camp beneath the Jungfrau summit at 3380 metres above sea level, and is staying on the glacier in the heart of the Swiss Alps for nine days. Weather permitting; from here he will illuminate the Jungfrau on eight evenings until 8 January 2012. Portrayed will be a Swiss cross, a Jungfrau Railway train and a portrait of Adolf Guyer-Zeller, founder of the Jungfrau Railway. The temperature at this altitude can drop to minus 30 degrees centigrade. Enough supplies for three weeks have been taken up to the camp, as a helicopter rescue is impossible in bad weather.

The illumination of the Jungfrau launched the start of celebrations for the Jungfrau Railway centenary. On 21 February 1912, Italian miners used a massive charge of dynamite to make the breakthrough to daylight on the Jungfraujoch. They completed the construction of the railway tunnel through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch mountains to the highest-altitude railway station in Europe. This incredible pioneering masterpiece has become Switzerland’s leading mountain railway. Today, the Jungfrau Railway carries around 700,000 passengers per year.

The illumination project is possible thanks to cooperation between Gerry Hofstetter, the Jungfrau Railway and Bayer. As a cultural partner of the Jungfrau illumination, Bayer wants to foster global awareness of the beauty and unique quality of the Swiss mountain world. Bayer has been active in Switzerland since 1956 and supports scientific projects in schools, the development of energy-saving technology and bold and visionary cultural initiatives.

In addition, a world premiere was also opened on Kleine Scheidegg on 1 January 2012: the ARTRUN – an art exhibition for skiers. Impressive images show the construction of the Jungfrau Railway, Gerry Hofstetter’s light art from around the world and Bayer’s cultural commitment.

It’s You is an interactive storefront-window projection that explores the mechanisms of public behaviors and the line between the real and constructed social actions.

The installation is a rear projection on large storefront window. Human figures crowd around something that they obscure from the pedestrian’s view. When the pedestrian stands behind them, as if to look over their shoulders, they step aside to allow him a view onto what they’re looking at. The pedestrian can now see part of the unfolding scene, and he obscures the view for the other pedestrians; he’s become part of the crowd.

When the pedestrian enters the interaction area in front of the window, the projected figures turn their heads glancing at him.
If the pedestrian stops, they will move aside, parting enough to allow him a view onto what they’re looking at.

After the pedestrian has been in the interaction area for a period of time, the projected figures will turn to face him as one of the figures points him out. This sudden gesture of recognition, confrontation or accusation directed at him startles and singles out the viewer. The other projected figures look at him, silently questioning, scrutinizing, judging. As the pedestrian moves, the projected people they track him with their gazes. The pedestrian realizes that he is the one on display, he became the spectacle. The projected figures are waiting for what he will do next. If he gestures of moves, the projected audience will applaud, whisper to each other or take pictures with their virtual cameras.

The viewer quickly realizes that the installation is interactive, and tries waving his hands or doing other gestures to ‘activate’ it. To this the projected figures react by clapping, applauding the performance and clarifying their role of audience.

Ivan Toth Depeña’s light-based installation “Reflect” was permanently installed in the Stephen Clark Government Center Lobby in Miami on November 18, 2011. Commissioned by the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places initiative, the work illuminates the dynamism of the lobby space and encourages a sense of discovery in the visitors.

This dynamic art work is designed by the artist with the idea of welcoming visitors and employees to Government Center in a fun and interactive way,” said Michael Spring, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. “It will energize the lobby and symbolize the County’s commitment to be informative and responsive to our citizens.”

As a main stop in Miami’s MetroRail system, the space serves as a hub for commuters; incorporating the notion of daily circulation into his piece, Depeña uses sensors and light to focus on the communal nature and circulatory qualities of the lobby. The project engages the building’s visitors and references the idea of community through various means of reflection, group interactivity and high-tech playfulness.

The basis of the project is a network of custom designed LED light boxes placed at specific locations throughout the lobby space. These light boxes interact and respond to the commuter’s movement and gesture via camera tracking, creating an energetic and vibrant artwork.

Custom software has been developed to complete Depeña’s vision and the LED nodes have been individually programmed to be the anchor of the work’s responsiveness and interactivity. Passers-by have their images captured by several infrared cameras; the installation’s software then abstracts that image in real time, displaying this abstraction on the light covered columns. The resulting image creates an ethereal mirror that testifies to the participation of the audience and the activity of the space.

The colorful lights of the installation also engage those beyond the lobby—as some columns face the public plaza—and the installation remains functioning even when there are no active participants, as the light panels retain the “memory” of users’ interactivity.  This is a key element in the conceptual infrastructure of the installation. The “memory” gives the space added life and allows the community to be a part of the constantly evolving artwork. Sensitive enough to detect the difference between multiple and single users, the system will vary the output and scale of the display to the number of visitors, and the hues will change according to the time of day. All visitors experience the vibrancy of Depeña’s work and have the ability directly affect the piece or simply witness the patterns produced by other users, elaborating on the idea of time and memory in the space.

Liber interior corticis tunica est, libri vivum textum. // El libro es la capa interna de la corteza, los libros un tejido vivo.

La palabra “libro” tiene origen en la raíz latina liber; corteza de árbol, el libro provienede algo vivo, y aunque muere orgánicamente puede volver a la vida de otra manera, al ser leído.

Libris. surge a partir de las coyunturas que se instauran en torno a los cambios y posibilidades que afronta el libro al pasar del medio tradicional al formato digital. Esta transformación deriva en una gama de sentimientos encontrados, críticas, fetichismos, miedos y fascinaciones. Sin importar el medio que se utilice, lo qué da sentido al libro-objeto es el interés hacia la lectura y/o la escritura, si nadie lo lee, el libro no tiene vida.

Sin intentar ser una instalación lúdica invadida por efectos especiales, se produce una ambientación que resalta una mesa con libros en blanco excepto el libro central que tiene una frase impresa, el espectador interesado se acercará a ver que esta escrito, llevandolo a una distancia íntima con los libros y buscará sorprenderlo con el movimiento orgánico que los hace parecer vivos. Así como sucede con el caminar de un pequeño insecto, el visitante se detendrá durante un momento para contemplar y percibir ese sutil rasgo de vida con la simulación de pulmones de papel mediante el sube y baja de las hojas, acompañado con un crujir al unísono de éstas rozando en cada movimiento.

Libris.  kinetic Installation by Marina Corach

The word “book finds its origin at the latin root “liber” (bark). A book comes out of something that is alive, and even though it dies organically, it comes alive as soon as someone reads the words within.

Libris was born from the joints established among those changes and possibilities that a book is facing, coming from its traditional form to a digital format. This transformation causes a wide range of mixed feelings, fetichisms, criticisims, fears and fascinations. But, it is not the media what matters, it is the interest towards its lecture what makes an object-book. Thus if nobody reads the book, it is not alive.

Not trying to be a recreational installation – saturated with special effects- Libris produces a stunning atmosphere. Open books on a table, all of them showing white pages, except for the one at the very center with a tiny phrase printed on it. The audience, when interested, would try to get closer to that phrase in order to read what it’s written, taking the spectator to an intimate distance with the book. This reduction of the space between them and the book would cause them sheets to start moving at an organic manner, as if the book was alive. Just like it happens when an insect passes by, now the visitor would stop for a second to contemplate and sense that subtle vital signs, not only the movement but also an almost imperceptible sound of the sheets caressing each other.

This building projection was to promote the new movie “The Tourist” starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. The Joule Hotel in downtown Dallas hosted a party with this 3D architectural mapping projection art show, it was projected on the Praetorian Building at 1607 Main Street. The size of the projection was 80′ x 80′.

The brand launched an interactive, 3D projection mapped, billboard version of the classic arcade claw game, where consumers could navigate the claw to win prizes. One of the winners took home a 2012 Chevy Sonic. This is the first time users have been allowed to interact with a 3D projection, and the work went down in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest 3D projection mapping ever. Pearl Media handled event and mapping.

Description

The project  The Topographic Projections and Implied Geometries Series by Jim Sanborn was produced by direct, large format, light projection.  The projector, powered by a mobile generator, was moved from site to site.  All of the pieces were photographed at night using long exposures.  On moonless nights, the landscape was lit with searchlights.  The landforms themselves are quite large, requiring the projector and camera to be, on average, 1/2 mile away from the subject landscape.

The images in the Topographic Projections and Implied Geometries Series are presented as 20″ x 24″, 30” x 36” and 48” x 60” digital prints.

On 8th December 2011, Peugeot celebrated the launch of its latest model, the Peugeot 208, with the world’s first ever motion controlled, tactile live projection mapping show at one of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic landmarks.

The event, created by the UK’s largest independent marketing communications agency BD Network, brought the 208’s ‘Let Your Body Drive’ ethos to life with a projection mapping video show controlled by the human body movements of a performer; literally letting his body ‘drive’ a live virtual projection of the Peugeot 208.

Using the latest motion capture technology, akin to the Microsoft Xbox Kinect system, the show pushed the boundaries of existing large-format building projections to deliver a captivating live theatrical show for audiences, supported by timed tactile physical interactions such as water spraying the crowd, real lights shining out, and more.

From concept to finished show, the seven-week project was BD Network’s ambitious response to Peugeot’s brief to create a live event that would generate international engagement and awareness as well as produce a piece of world-class viral content to support Peugeot’s increased focus on digital marketing.

A two-minute film of the spectacular show is now hosted on YouTube; and this post-event online video activity allows global audiences to engage with this unique experience that embodies Peugeot’s ‘Motion and Emotion’ brand positioning.

With the help of MAdMapper’s Space Scanner tool, we were able to get a pixel precise view of the projection surfaces, and use this as a handy background to draw our lines and quads.

With this background, the productivity was greatly increased.

Although the lighting situation was far from prefect (no possibility to turn of the traffic lights, lots of people passing by, shaky tripod… etc), the resulting image were clean enough to be useful.

For each projector, I did 3 different shots, using different settings, then composited the 3 pictures together to keep only the cleaner parts.

Verdict: the closer you can get to ISO 100 is better, as you get less artifacts/noise.

On Monday 28th November Nokia Lumia 800 with Windows phone http://nokia.ly/uBVXxw brought deadmau5 and the world’s most advanced 4D technology together and created an amazing free light show at Millbank Tower, London.

Millbank was plunged into darkness with the iconic tower acting as the canvas for a never-before-seen spectacular. Each of the 120 metre high building’s 800 windows were covered with vinyl as 16 powerful projectors, stationed 300 metres away on the other side of the river, beamed 3D images onto the structure. Huge butterflies flew across the London skyline and the tower was twisted, pulsated and even fell down. Billed as the “future of live events” the spectacular show was accompanied by music from super producer deadmau5, who created exclusive remixes for the performance — adding the 4th dimension.

When a photorapher masterfully blends two of our prime passions, light graffiti and abandoned places, they will always have a place on TheCoolist.  Photographer Andy Hemingway has released a photo series of light painting in an abandoned parking garage in Houston, TX.  Ribbons of light flutter through empty, open spaces, weaving luminescent floating images that stand out against the stark, cold appearance of the abandoned garage.  With a flashlight and some special tools, Hemingway can frame his shot on a tripod, set a long exposure and dance through the shot with his lights in hand.  The result is what you see below, a great collection of light painting photography.

Some future designs won’t be as functional as they will be visually impacting, but such has always been true about the clothes we wear.  Designer Wei-Chieh Shih built a laser suit with multiple rows of lasers stretching across the wearer’s back.  The suit will only have full visibility in a smoky environment, so this one is built for the night clubs.
