The second large-scale installation for Xujiahui is created by the Beijing based artist Wang Yuyang. Suspended in-between trees in the only “natural habitat” of the Xujiahui area, namely the Xuhui park, this particular abstraction of the rarely seen moon in Shanghai skies induces a kind of an “artificial” natural and surprising experience for its audiences.

Miraikan “TSUNAGARI” Project
The “TSUNAGARI” project (by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation) is an innovative project in which we can share scientific information with the world through a new form of visual expression, and provides us with “know – ledge”on our planet and our species. The globe, which measures an impressive 6-meters, is the world’s first large-scale spherical OLED screen. Hanging 18 meters from the floor, it has been constructed with aluminum and covered with 10,362 OLED panels, each measuring 96 x 96 millimeters. The spherical screen will be officially unveiled on June 11th as part of the museum’s brand-new “Geo-Cosmos” exhibit, where it will display scenes of clouds and other visions of the earth taken from a meteorological satellite.

Jason Bruges Studio’s latest artwork has been unveiled at Sunderland Station. The 144m long piece presents a virtual platform filled with travellers within a glass block wall. The 3m tall glass block wall in the underground train station has been turned into a large low-resolution video matrix (755×15 pixels). Behind the wall is a disused platform, which long ago used to see passengers waiting for trains. Now the tracks are long gone and the old platform is hidden from view., we have created ghostly characters that appear behind the glass wall opposite passengers waiting for the trains.

‘lit tree‘, an installation that uses a small potted tree as the site for an interactive light display, is the newest work on exhibition by kimchi and chips, the collaborative studio of london-based technical designer elliot woods and seoul-based artist mimi son.
considered by the artists an ‘in-progress prototype’, ‘lit tree’ represents a new approach to 3D mapping, involving the non-invasive utilization of the existing environment for 3D projection, accomplished through the realtime scanning of the projection site. as a visitor places her hand above a wooden plinth located near the bamboo plant, her hand is scanned in three dimensions, and the 3D shape is reflected ’inside’ the tree. thereafter, she can select and highlight a volume of the tree gesturally. kimchi and chips hopes that the response of these volumetric patterns of light to visitor interaction will draw attention to the invisible effects of our day-to-day interaction with the environment.

From April 2011, rAndom International’s Reflex Installation at the Wellcome Trust transforms the Darwin & Mendel windows into the habitat of an organism that represents itself in the form of light. By reacting to passers-by it invites a physical response to the building
The swarm behaviour of the installation is inspired by an algorithm developed to emulate the collective decision making process employed by creatures (such as birds flocking, ants, etc) in the natural world.

Stop motion form and colour, using light painting techniques by Kim Pimmel with sound from Tron Legacy trailers. Every frame is an individually shot photograph with long exposure reaching up to 20 seconds in some cases. For light control was used Arduino via bluetooth to drive a stepper motor. The stepper motor controled the movements of the lights remotely from Processing. The light sources included cold cathode case lights, EL wire, lasers and more. Check out Kim`s Light Studies.

In the context of performance, digital media plays an important role in creating a sense of illusion, making the impossible possible, and giving visual properties to otherwise invisible entities. Lately we’ve seen many visual artists focus their attentions on the performance sector to create collaborative, multi-disciplinary work that merges together different practices and creative approaches to create performance based experiences that feel entirely new.
One such experiment is A4, a multimedia performance that features Korean pianist Jin Wook Lee and the collaborative visuals of Lumpens and Octamin. Opening with a black backdrop and a free-floating white sheet in the foreground, the performance pairs projection with live piano improvisation, synchronizing the audio-reactive visuals with the experimental music composition. Each pizzicato chord struck by the pianist seems seems to pluck at the undulating sheet. Several minutes into the performance, the pianist uses a golf ball to demonstrate the prepared piano technique first coined and popularized by experimental composer John Cage, placing the golf ball between or on the piano strings to alter the timbre. With gradual progression, Lee moves into Henry Cowell’s string piano technique, directly playing on the strings of his piano and entangling the sheet in nebulous confusion with this avant-garde approach.
